Reaching forward
Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13–14 · WEBThe past can hold our attention through regret or through a season we wish we could recover. Either one can keep us from fully responding to what God is doing now. Paul chose a forward posture, allowing Christ’s call to become more decisive than both his failures and achievements.
Forgetting what lies behind does not require denying what happened. Healing involves remembering truthfully, grieving honestly and learning wisely. Paul’s own history included harm he had caused and grace he had received. He did not erase either one; he allowed Christ to redefine what came next.
We can become so occupied with reviewing yesterday that we neglect today’s obedience. Regret keeps asking us to rewrite what cannot be changed. Grace invites us to respond faithfully with what is now in our hands.
What forward step has remained delayed because your attention is fixed behind you? Bring the memory to God, receive whatever correction or healing is needed, and turn again toward His call. You do not move forward by pretending. You move forward by placing the past under the authority of Christ.
My past is under the authority of Christ. I receive grace to learn, heal and reach forward toward the call of God.
Father, meet me in the memories that still pull my attention backward. Give me courage to face truth without remaining bound to regret. Help me receive Your correction, forgiveness and healing, then strengthen me to take the next faithful step toward Your call. Fix my attention on Your call and make me faithful with what is before me today.
Amen.
